constellations

There are currently 88 constellations. They are recognized by the International Astronomical Union since 1922. They are based on those listed by Claudius Ptolemy. He is Greek-speaking mathematician, geographer, astronomer, and astrologer who lived in the Hellenistic culture of Roman Egypt.

The earliest direct evidence for the constellations comes from inscribed stones and clay writing tablets that were dug up in Mesopotamia. It appears that writings of the Mesopotamian constellations were created within a relatively short interval of time from around 1300 to 1000 B.C. The Sumerian constellations were made by the Babylonian astronomy. There are a bunch of  Babylonian star catalogues or lists of stars, notably the MUL.APIN. The MUL.APIN text dated back to the Late Bronze Age, ca. 14th to 12th century BC.
